Housing project breaks ground at former Winchester Arms factory

(9/11/2013) Hartford Business Journal - Construction crews broke ground Tuesday on a $59.3 million mixed-use development at the long-vacant Winchester Repeating Arms Co. factory in New Haven, Gov. Dannel Malloy's office said.

Winchester Lofts, located at the edge of Yale's campus, is the second phase of the project and is financed in part by with a $4 million grant from the state Department of Housing.

The 158 mixed-income apartments are being developed by Forest City Enterprises of Cleveland, Ohio. The development will have 32 units designated as affordable. Of those, 16 will be priced for low-income tenants.

The developer expects to complete the project in mid-2014.

The former Winchester complex has been renamed Science Park and now houses 1 million square feet of incubator space and the offices of Higher One, which employs 275 employees on the site. The Higher One build out represented the first phase of the project.
